Sound Chaser returns with the second of the YouTube covers shows. This episode is the second in the two-part series dedicated to YouTube posted covers of progressive rock classics. Many of these are highly faithful to the original recordings. Many others are clever rearrangements. When I was searching for covers of prog tunes, much of what I found was, of course, covers of what Edward Macan called The Big Six in his book on progressive rock, Rocking the Classics. These are Pink Floyd, Jethro Tull, Genesis, Yes, King Crimson, and ELP. We will one cover version of a tune by each of those acts. However, I was surprised by the range of other acts that received the YouTube cover treatment. In the last show, we heard covers of tunes from seemingly unlikely sources, and that continues on this show too. Get ready for some new takes on old classics.

The Sound Chaser Progressive Rock Podcast is on the web. This week is the first of two special shows dedicated to covers of progressive music posted exclusively on YouTube, or on YouTube and other noncommercial venues. Originally made for people to post their own content, YouTube provides many opportunities for amateur and semi-professional musicians, and even a few professional ones, to perform, record, and post videos of music. Many of these videos are performances of music by famous artists. And, yes, many of the videos are very amateurish. Yet, there have been some very good versions of famous and even not so famous progressive rock tunes. This makes YouTube another outlet for progressive music, and one we should not ignore if we are to explore the entirety of what progressive rock is. All of the versions you hear on this show are not available on cds or commercial media other than YouTube, as far as I can tell through my researches, except for one tune that I missed in my first research. Of course, the music you hear is extracted from the videos. The playlist for this show will contain the links to the videos, so you can see the full production for yourselves. Enjoy, as we take an impressionistic walk down the path of nostalgia.

The Sound Chaser Progressive Rock Podcast streams once more. This show through all 137 episodes so far has sought to traverse in three-hour increments the rough and thorny landscape of over a half-century of progressive rock and related music. We have gone through the eras of prog, explored the styles of prog, looked at various connections from other music genres, listened to its expressions across cultures, and confronted some of the controversies. Given everything that is stacked against prog – the disdain of music and culture critics, the apologetic justifications of its fans for listening to it, the huge shift in commercial backing toward “safe” music, the huge shift in the way music is financed that leaves artists paid next to nothing although there are more self-styled progressive rock artists than ever – the resilience of the genre, its fans, and its creators is nothing short of amazing. Listeners young and old are asking for more. This episode, number 138, provides another varied selection, answering the question of whether there is more. Though not everything will be to everyone’s taste, yet each listener can finish the show having found something new to them for them to seek out.

The Sound Chaser Progressive Rock Podcast takes another sweeping trip through progressive rock and related music. For those who say that progressive rock is not relevant, I would point them to an article published in Forbes magazine online from March 25th titled "What Can Progressive Rock Teach Us About Digital Networks?" I would also point them too an article profiling Big Big Train as an example 3rd wave progressive rock published in of all places the American Conservative in December 2017. So, progressive rock has cultural relevance and we here at Sound Chaser Headquarters are ready to explore what progressive rock has to offer.
